Steam distillation

Tell us your annual volume, not your first order

Price per kilo drops sharply with volume. Sampling runs 10–100 ml for bench evaluation and a GC check against your standard. Trial batches run 500 ml to 5 L for a pilot production run and stability testing. Commercial supply runs 25 L to 180 kg drums on a contract or call-off basis. Export shipments are prepared with commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and analysis certificates as the destination market requires.

Essential Oil Sourcing Guide

How do I tell a pure essential oil from an adulterated one?

Smell alone will not do it. Ask for the GC-MS chromatogram and compare the marker constituents against a published reference range for that botanical and origin. Warning signs are a marker percentage sitting suspiciously at the top of the range, a chromatogram with unexplained peaks, or a price well under the current market. An oil 40% cheaper than everyone else is telling you something.

What is the difference between natural, organic and therapeutic grade?

Natural means extracted from the plant with nothing added — that is this catalogue. Organic adds a certified farming and chain-of-custody standard verified by a certifying body; see our organic essential oils. Therapeutic grade is a commercial descriptor, not a regulated standard — what matters underneath is the analytical profile, which is why we publish specifications for our therapeutic grade oils rather than relying on the label.

Why does the same oil vary in price between suppliers?

Four reasons in order of impact: botanical origin and chemotype, crop year and yield, extraction method, and whether the oil is first distillation or a redistilled fraction. Lavender from Bulgaria, France and India is all genuinely lavender oil and all prices differently. Compare on specification, not on botanical name.

Can I get a sample before committing to a bulk order?

Yes. Sampling quantities are available across the catalogue so your lab can run its own checks and your formulator can bench the oil in the actual product. Tell us the target application when you request the sample — we will often send two origins to compare rather than one.

Will you match a specification I already buy against?

Send the current COA or internal spec sheet and we will tell you honestly whether we can match it, come close, or not at all. Being told no early is cheaper for both of us than a rejected shipment.

How consistent is batch-to-batch quality?

Essential oils are agricultural products, so some variation between crop years is normal and honest. What should be consistent is that every batch falls inside an agreed specification window. For buyers needing very tight consistency we can blend across batches to a target profile — state this at enquiry stage so it is built into the quote.

What is a chemotype and does it affect my order?

A chemotype is the same plant species producing a materially different chemical profile because of climate, altitude or soil. Thyme is the classic case — a linalool chemotype is gentle enough for skincare while a thymol chemotype is far more aggressive. If your formulation depends on a specific chemotype, name it on the purchase order, not just the plant.

How should bulk essential oils be stored?

Cool, dark, tightly closed, with as little headspace as practical. Oxygen and light are what age an oil. Citrus oils are the most fragile and are best refrigerated once opened; woods and resins are the most forgiving. Decant working quantities rather than repeatedly opening a drum.

What shelf life should I plan for?

As a planning rule, citrus oils are the shortest lived, herb and leaf oils sit in the middle, and woods, roots and resins last longest. Shelf life on the COA assumes unopened storage in the original container. Once you decant, the clock speeds up. Order to your actual consumption rate rather than buying a year ahead to save on freight.
